To mark its 20th anniversary, the Pinakothek der Moderne in Munich asked art Next Level to invite Refik Anadol to create a digital data sculpture, which was projected onto the north façade of the building and is now part of the museum collection.
The data sculpture „PdM Dreams“ is based on a large number of images of the Pinakothek der Moderne provided by its four museums – devoted to art, prints and drawings, architecture and design – as well as its cooperation partners.
Refik Anadol and his team have supplemented this source material with further publicly accessible data from digital archives related to the Pinakothek der Moderne.
The entire project was initiated, organized and curated by art Next Level.
The data sculpture “PdM Dreams“ has been acquired for the Museums collection thanks to PIN. Freunde der Pinakothek der Moderne e.V. with the support of art Next Level.

At the fourth edition of the Water Light Festival in Brixen, Italy, Refik Anadol presented a projection on floating water of the Data Sculpture Bosphorus.
The event shows yearly light art installations at water locations in the old town of Brixen, the Fortress of Franzensfeste and the Engelsburg of Neustift Monastery. Artists of different origin, education and nationality take part in the festival and deal in their works with the two natural elements of water and light.
For twenty-four evenings, “Water is life – light is art” will be the central theme of this unique festival, once again drawing attention to how beautiful, precious and at the same time fragile the world we live in is.

In the Kurhaus Baden-Baden, Refik Anadol presented the possibilities of media art at the highest technical level using latest high-end projectors and LED walls. Three of his data sculptures transformed the historically charming architecture of the Kurhaus into a programmed course of flowing pixels and mutating plants, thus captivating the visitor.
The Data Painting Nature Dreams is a kind of reality experiment, a cinematic experience commemorating the beauty of the land we share. Using an Algorithm developed by Artificial intelligence 46 million images of nature create a flowing artwork. Nature Dreams is the immersive artwork which makes the virtually created space appear real, incorporates pigments, shapes, and patterns that we associate with our sensory experiences with nature while paying homage to its unbound poetic sublimity.
The Data Painting Melting Memories offers new insights into the representational possibilities emerging from the intersection of advanced technology and contemporary art. The viewer is immersed in a creative vision of “recollection”. In the form of data paintings, data sculptures and light projections, the artwork penetrates new technological levels, which enable the visitor to experience aesthetic interpretations of motor movements within the human brain. The data is based on the brain waves of volunteers who remembered long past experiences of long-term memory while recording an EEG.
Bosphorus is a data sculpture inspired by high frequency radar data collections of Marmara Sea provided by Turkish State Meteorological Service in every 30 minutes intervals. The data of sea surface activity over a period of 30 days are transformed into a poetic, immersive experience on two levels. The projections on the floor and on the screen make the movements of the sea tangible in a unique way. A real immersive experience.
The entire project was initiated, organized and curated by art Next Level.

MUSE, the Rolls-Royce Art Programme, presented Refik Anadol’s Data Painting Art of Perfection at the launch of Whispers, a highly exclusive App for Rolls-Royce owners only, in New York.
Art of Perfection emerges from a creative collaboration between MUSE, the Rolls-Royce Art Programme and Los Angeles-based multimedia artist Refik Anadol.
Art of Perfection is the masterpiece of the Rolls-Royce Art Programme in 2019.
The artwork uses a series of data sets taken from Rolls-Royce Motor Cars’s Surface Finish Centre. Data sets relating to the color of every Rolls-Royce motor car created over the last ten years combined with the data generated by the programmed robotic movement required to perfectly apply the surface finish to each car.
The project was organized and curated by art Next Level.
