vi|ew

Brandenburger Tor, Berlin (Germany)

2026 Aug 12th – Aug 17th

To mark the 65th anniversary of the construction of the Berlin Wall, Kulturprojekte Berlin and the Berlin Wall Foundation are organising a city-wide programme featuring an open-air exhibition at the Brandenburger Tor.

As the most prominent part of the exhibition, art Next Level is presenting the art installation “vi|ew” by the artist Hubertus Hamm in front of the Brandenburger Tor.

“vi|ew” is a 30-metre by 3-metre wall consisting of 24 interconnected slats. The artwork’s distinctive feature lies in its materiality: depending on the viewing angle and distance from the installation, it becomes partially transparent and permeable. What may initially appear to be an impenetrable wall blocking the view suddenly opens up, revealing the view beyond. This creates a play of perspectives, as the space on the other side only becomes visible through one’s own movement and repositioning in relation to the installation. As the distance increases, the transparency increases, resulting in a panoramic view. However, the closer one gets to the installation, the smaller the field of vision becomes, until only a sharply defined detail remains visible.

This optical phenomenon magically draws in passers-by and immediately invites spontaneous interaction. In this way, moments of separation and encounter, of clarity and disorientation, can be experienced. Just where eye contact might have been possible a moment ago, the view suddenly slips away. Where a spatial image of the other side had emerged, darkness gradually spreads. In this historical context, the installation by the artist Hubertus Hamm unfolds a new layer of meaning. It navigates the tension between separation and connection. Through the diversity of perspectives, it allows one to experience one’s own standpoint as something that is always relational. In this way, it conveys not only the value of freedom and the absoluteness that a boundary can signify, but also the question of democratic values and dividing lines in our present day.

Hubertus Hamm’s installation thus becomes a place of encounter and dialogue in the public realm. viIew becomes an art form of artistic intervention in the public space: transforming the square in front of the Brandenburger Tor into a new aesthetic space of experience that opens up new perspectives, stimulates reflection and, at the same time, becomes an unforgettable artistic experience.

Hubertus Hamm is represented on this project by art Next Level, with the support of Artikel 1 Initiative für Menschenwürde e.V. The installation forms part of the project ‘65 Years Since the Construction of the Berlin Wall’ organised by Kulturprojekte Berlin and the Berlin Wall Foundation, in cooperation with the Berlin Commissioner for Coming to Terms with the SED Dictatorship. Made possible by funding from the Federal Government Commissioner for Culture and the Media and the LOTTO Foundation Berlin.

The open air exhibition will be open to public for free.

Brixen (Italy)

2022 Apr 29 – May 22

At the fourth edition of the Water Light Festival in Brixen, Italy, Refik Anadol presented a projection on floating water of the Data Sculpture Bosphorus.

The event shows yearly light art installations at water locations in the old town of Brixen, the Fortress of Franzensfeste and the Engelsburg of Neustift Monastery. Artists of different origin, education and nationality take part in the festival and deal in their works with the two natural elements of water and light.

For twenty-four evenings, “Water is life – light is art” will be the central theme of this unique festival, once again drawing attention to how beautiful, precious and at the same time fragile the world we live in is.

Digital Dreams - Refik Anadol

Baden-Baden (Germany)

2020 Jul 4 – Sep 4

In the Kurhaus Baden-Baden, Refik Anadol presented the possibilities of media art at the highest technical level using latest high-end projectors and LED walls. Three of his data sculptures transformed the historically charming architecture of the Kurhaus into a programmed course of flowing pixels and mutating plants, thus captivating the visitor.

The Data Painting Nature Dreams is a kind of reality experiment, a cinematic experience commemorating the beauty of the land we share. Using an Algorithm developed by Artificial intelligence 46 million images of nature create a flowing artwork. Nature Dreams is the immersive artwork which makes the virtually created space appear real, incorporates pigments, shapes, and patterns that we associate with our sensory experiences with nature while paying homage to its unbound poetic sublimity.

The Data Painting Melting Memories offers new insights into the representational possibilities emerging from the intersection of advanced technology and contemporary art. The viewer is immersed in a creative vision of “recollection”. In the form of data paintings, data sculptures and light projections, the artwork penetrates new technological levels, which enable the visitor to experience aesthetic interpretations of motor movements within the human brain. The data is based on the brain waves of volunteers who remembered long past experiences of long-term memory while recording an EEG.

Bosphorus is a data sculpture inspired by high frequency radar data collections of Marmara Sea provided by Turkish State Meteorological Service in every 30 minutes intervals. The data of sea surface activity over a period of 30 days are transformed into a poetic, immersive experience on two levels. The projections on the floor and on the screen make the movements of the sea tangible in a unique way. A real immersive experience.

The entire project was initiated, organized and curated by art Next Level.
