Hubertus Hamm (b. 1950, Werdohl, Germany) lifes and works in Munich, Germany. Hubertus was eductated at the Bavarian State College of Photography Munich, Germany. For Hubertus Hamm, content and surface form a unity. This understanding prompted him to incorporate the image support, the paper itself, into the design. As a consequence, he transferred his works into space, into three-dimensionality. By superimposing different layers, or by scoring, tearing, folding and bending the material, his works become three-dimensional objects.
Hubertus Hamm’s artistic approach moves away from purely classical photography. Instead, he analyses the modalities of the image and image production itself by exploring and transcending the limits of the medium in terms of three-dimensionality and materiality. He explores the conceptual possibilities in the production of images/the staging of his images in order to understand the meaning/property of space and time, truth and fake.
With the series “Molded Mirrors” he counteracts his fascination for photography. In contrast to the image, the mirror image is ephemeral. It is a fleeting interaction with the viewer or viewers. And only for the period of time that is spent looking in the mirror.
In his latest series of works “vi – ew”, the artist also reflects the individual, immediate, analogue and reciprocal experience of the viewer with his works.
From the side, the works look like a dark, opaque surface. However, the opacity dissolves more and more depending on the viewer’s position. If you stand very close to it, the field of vision narrows to a single point. If you step back far enough, what lies behind becomes visible.
